Eating for Detox: Pomegranate

by Lisa Bolard

pomegranateThe nutritional benefits of pomegranates abound.  As the weather gets colder, we know that it is again the season to harvest these fabulous fruits.  The list of pomegranate benefits seems to get longer all the time, and there seems to be plenty of research being done even by the medical establishment which actively supports the value of eating this fruit.  Some of these claims have been extensively studied and others are beliefs of many people from different parts of the world over time.

Here is a partial list:

  • Contains vitamin C, folic acid, fiber, potassium, niacin and vitamins A and E
  • Combats hardening of the arteries which also translates to avoiding heart attack and stroke
  • Contains much more anti-oxidants than either green teas, which fight free radicals, culpable in causing cancer and other diseases
  • Fights osteoporosis
  • Can help prevent the return of prostate cancer
  • Lowers bad cholesterol (proven in mice at this point)
  • Lowers blood pressure for people with hypertension
  • Pomegranate seed oil can cause breast cancer cells to die and keeps healthy cells intact
  • It is believed to support the body’s natural defenses against Alzheimer’s disease
  • Long-term use may help combat erectile dysfunction

It is believed that regular ingestion can create and maintain clear skin, a youthful glow, and soothe skin inflammation.

One word of caution:
Pomegranate juice might interfere with some medications in much the same way as grapefruit juice; when grapefruit juice is risky, it is safest to assume that pomegranate juice is also risky.

How to Eat Pomegranates

pomegranate-seedsThe edible portion of the fruit is the seeds, and the white membrane portion and shell should be discarded.  The seeds taste slightly sweet and tangy at the same time.  First cut the top of the pomegranate off and score the rind in several places around the fruit to make it easier to cut the fruit into sections.  Put the sections in a bowl of water and pull the seeds out with your fingers.  The juice stains, so be sure to keep it off your clothing.

Detoxifying and Nourishing Your Thyroid

Low thyroid function, also known as hypothyroidism, is a common, yet often overlooked, cause of chronic health problems. Back in the 1950’s it was considered to be a condition rarely encountered in clinical practice. Today, it’s practically an epidemic. It’s estimated that 25% of people show measurable signs of hypothyroidism on blood analysis. The good news is that there are a lot of actions you can take to protect your thyroid gland.

Most people don’t realize it, but many hormone imbalances are related to toxic overload.  The thyroid in particular is sensitive to environmental toxins.  Chlorine in  your water, bromide in your bread, fluoride in your toothpaste and your water and a long list of over the counter and prescription drugs can cause major disruptions in thyroid function.  Pesticides and preservatives in food, air fresheners and toxins in cleaning products all can play a role in thyroid imbalances.

By avoiding the toxins mentioned above, scheduling regular liver detoxification procedures and programs and nourishing your thyroid, you can restore your energy and reverse many of the widespread health challenges that low thyroid function causes.  We’ll go into more detail about hormones and their relationship to toxicity during the hormone teleseminar that’s part of the free 4 part series of teleseminars we’re offering this month.  Till then, here are  3 tips that you can easily put in place right away and start protecting your thyroid and increasing your energy.

  • Avoid Gluten.KELP-NOODLESGluten is a protein found in the common grains that most people eat several times a day—wheat, rye, barley and oats, as well as the heirloom varieties of wheat, spelt and kamut.A huge segment of the population is intolerant to gluten meaning that their bodies produce antibodies that attack the gluten AND healthy tissue. There is a very strong link between autoimmune hypothyroid and gluten intolerance. I’ve had patients bring their abnormally high thyroid stimulating hormone levels to normal within as little as six weeks.  Gluten Free Diets are becoming more and more available.   There are many gluten-free alternatives to your staple gluten containing foods.  My favorite are kelp noodles.

I’ve created a gluten survival pack, available for free on my website.  It contains e-books, mp3 recordings, and special lists of hidden sources of gluten. To order yours now, go to http://drritamarie.com/GlutenFree.htm Included in the gluten package are recipes for sea vegetables and a powerpoint presentation on thyroid health.

  • Hydrate with pure water.waterThis is actually 2 recommendations in one. Chronic dehydration can lead to inflammatory disease, so it’s important to consume at least ½ your body weight in fluid ounces every day.An even bigger concern is the quality of the water. Chlorine and fluoride added to municipal water supplies disrupt the binding of iodine to form thyroid hormones.Further, chlorinated water in the shower is even worse because the vapors enter the body via the lungs, in much higher concentrations that found in drinking water. Keeping well hydrated with pure spring, reverse osmosis or distilled water will protect you from the dangerous additives in our current water supply.
  • Include sea vegetables daily.digitataGreens from the sea contain a wide variety of minerals and vitamins that support thyroid function. The most important of these is iodine. Since most of our soil is deficient in iodine, there are very few vegetables that contain significant amounts of iodine.Iodine is critical for thyroid function. In fact, a certain species of kelp, laminaria digitata, has been found to contain measurable amounts of the thyroid hormones, T3 and T4. Eating 1-2 ounces of sea vegetation each week is a good starting point.

If you have a diagnosed or suspect thyroid dysfunction, talk to your doctor before beginning a new program. Ask your doctor to order thyroid antibody tests, especially if you currently have any type of autoimmune disease.
Being healthy is your birthright. Take good care of your thyroid gland and you’ll be energetic and clear headed well into your twilight years.

We’ll be covering lots more details about the thyroid and other hormones during our free teleseminar “Hormones, Thyroid Imbalances, Weight Gain & Water Retention”

In this teleseminar on detox, we’ll be discussing

  • How toxic emotions like fear and worry disrupt your hormone system!
  • Why some women suffer with PMS, painful periods, etc. and others do not!
  • What it takes to avoid the hot flashes and go through menopause with ease.
  • What happens to your hormones while you’re watching the evening news or reading the paper.
  • Could negative thoughts, worry and stress be causing your weight gain? Menstrual problem? Fatigue?
  • Why thyroid imbalance is an epidemic!
  • Sluggishness and weight gain are symptoms! Find out what they are symptoms of and how to handle it.
  • What foods are most responsible for upsetting your hormone balance and how to replace them with healthier alternatives.
  • Which common, everyday choices are causing sluggish metabolism and weight gain?
  • How dry skin, thin hair, coldness, weakness, and high cholesterol are all related to one thing!
  • The biggest reason people can’t let go of excess weight in spite of years of juggling with diets.
  • How foods from the ocean may contain the missing link to balancing your hormones naturally.

Eating for Detox: The Power of the Daikon  Radish

Contributed By Valerie Kliewer

Daikon_radishThe Daikon radish is one of the best vegetables in the arsenal against the many ailments of excess.  It has the amazing ability to help cut through and clean out mucus conditions brought on by the over consumption of animal products.

Though often passed over for more familiar roots such as carrots or beets, this powerful tuber should not be overlooked. Originating in East Asia and shaped like a very large white carrot or in some varieties like a large round turnip, the daikon radish is a smart choice for fall dining.

During the flu season, it is wise to include immune boasting, mucus busting radishes to your daily diet. Laryngitis and sinusitis are both eased by the juice of radishes.

With a cooling thermal nature and a milder flavor than smaller radishes, the detoxing and fat grabbing capability of these long white tubers can’t be beat.  Soothe headaches and encourage digestion by adding alkalizing radishes to your diet.  Chinese medicine uses radishes to nourish the gallbladder and the liver.

Paul Pitchford in his book Healing with Whole Foods suggests using a tablespoon of radishes daily for several weeks for gallstones and kidney and bladder stones. He cautions against the use of radishes for those who have deficient or cold conditions.

Consume radishes by juicing, grating onto salads, or by trying the delicious raw recipes that follow.

**Valerie Kliewer is a food writer passionate about the healing power of foods. She specializes in helping those with vitiligo find healing. She can often be found in the produce department of Whole Foods replacing Paul Simon’s lyrics “I got a Nikon camera” with “I got a daikon radish.”   Listen for her and buy a bunch of daikons today.

Detox Programs for the Brain: Autism, ADD, Depression, Anxiety and Brain Fog.

Millions of people are diagnosed with conditions like autism, ADD, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression every year. Many more suffer with irritation and mood swings they don’t understand, without ever being “diagnosed”. People are told they can’t do anything about it. They’re told these conditions are genetic and are sold a pill to help relieve the symptoms.

We know that relieving symptoms never really addresses the problem, does it?

When it comes to your health and the people advising you about it, ask A LOT of questions.  Look beneath the surface  and question what you hear.

People used to insist the Earth was flat, remember. If anyone tells you there are no solutions, be an incurable optimist and keep on looking.

In the second part of our series of FREE detox teleseminars, Dr. Ritamarie and I put a few facts on the table about the gut-brain connection and its relationship to autism, ADD, and other well-known but poorly understood conditions.  A few missing pieces of your health puzzle will start falling into place once you hear this information.

You can sign up to get the recordings of the first two calls, and join us in person for the next 2.

We have a message, a powerful one, that we’re trying to get out to the world.  The truth is, if some people hadn’t forced the conventional ideas of the day, we’d *still* think the Earth  was flat. I’m sure the evolution of human health is bound for better things, but we have to start by informing  ourselves about the facts and being willing to take the telescope in our own hands, too, once in a while.

Here are a few of the topics discussed on the call:

–What is the gut-brain connection and how are ADD, autism and bipolar disorder affected by what you eat.

–How and why what you eat affects the way you think, feel and behave.

–How to recognize when your mood swings and irritability are being triggered by food.

–Why conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, insomnia, ADD, brain-fog, anxiety, irritability and other conditions may all be connected to nutritional deficiencies, toxins and processed foods, NOT exclusively genetic conditions as some would have you believe!

–Can’t focus? You might simply be missing one thing in your diet. Find out what that is!

–Finally understand how stress inhibits your “wizard” brain and puts your “lizard” brain in control

–How long does it take to overcome these conditions and eliminate these toxins from the body?

–The exact mechanism that causes you to feel sluggish or have trouble concentrating and how to handle it.

If you’ve got other questions, please post them in the comments box below. We’ll be sure to address them in future blog posts over the coming weeks.

Remember, if some people hadn’t forced the the issue and gone against the common views of the day, we’d still think the Earth was flat.  I’m sure the evolution of human health is bound for better things, but it all starts by informing yourself of the facts and being willing to take up a telescope in your own hands once in a while to see what’s going on yourself.

In health and with love,

Tera and Dr. Ritamarie

Unlocking the Gut Brain Connection; Heal your Brain by Healing your Gut

by

Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo

Have you noticed that there’s an epidemic of brain related problems in our world today? I’m sure you know at least one, perhaps several people who are suffering from  problems such as depression, anxiety, brain fog, irritability, difficulty focusing, or hyperactivity.   I see people with these problems in my office all the time.

What you may not realize is that problems in your head are connected to problems in your gut.  There’s a condition called leaky gut that results from low nutrient density foods, toxins in your air, water and food and eating in a stressful envronment. It’s likely that at least one of these stressors is a part of your world on a regular basis.

My newsletter last week went into details about leaky gut.   You can get access to last weeks newsletter at http://www.drritamarie.com/newsletter.   The Recording of the Leaky Gut and Candida Teleseminar that Tera Warner and I did last week was recorded:  http://www.drritamarie.com/url/DetoxTelecourse

So what does leaky gut have to do with brain chemistry imbalances?  A lot!  Unlocking the gut-brain connection has been shown improve brain fog, ADHD, autism, depression and many more problems that plague so many today. Some foods cause antibodies to form that attack brain cells.  The passage of toxins into the blood stream through a leaky gut creates a whole host of problems.  Blood sugar and neurotransmitter  imbalances due to malabsorption of nutrients can lead to brain fog, depression and lack of focus.

Want to learn more about the gut brain connection and how to  control your brain through what you eat, how you eat and the health of your digestion?

On November 10, I’ll be explaining lots more in a FREE teleseminar.
http://www.drritamarie.com/url/DetoxTelecourse

This teleseminar will explain:
* What the gut-brain connection is and how ADD, autism and bipolar disorder can be influenced by what you eat.
* How and why what you eat affects the way you think, feel and behave.
* How to recognize when your mood swings and irritability are being triggered by food.
* Why conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, insomnia, ADD, brain-fog, anxiety, irritability and other conditions may all be connected to nutritional deficiencies, toxins and processed foods, NOT genetic conditions as some would have you believe!
* Can’t focus? You might simply be missing one thing in your diet. Find out what that is!
* Finally understand how stress inhibits your “wizard” brain and puts your “lizard” brain in control
* How long does it take to overcome these conditions and eliminate these toxins from the body?
* The exact mechanism that causes you to feel sluggish or have trouble concentrating and how to handle it.
* What the liver does with excess toxins when it is overloaded how this affects your brain!

Health and Healing: Changing Lives through Daily Choices

by
Tera Warner

Last week, I met a woman who had given up on her health.

After 19 years of struggling with Crohn’s disease and being told to eat more white rice and drink more milk, she was sick and tired of being sick and tired. She paid big bucks to be seen by the “top” doctor for Crohn’s in the city. He told her to avoid fiber, eat white bread and cheese. She took immune-suppressing drugs and went to the bathroom more times in one day than most of us go in a week. When she heard about me, she figured it would be another fruitless encounter with promise, but no possibility.

She was wrong.

I’ll tell you what happened in a minute, but first I want to let you know that one of the biggest reasons I do what I do, is because when I walk in the street and see people plagued by illnesses that do NOT need to exist in the first place, I ache inside.

I want to DO something, CHANGE something, SAY something loud enough that people will hear it and wake up to the fact that life is not always as it appears.

People are told their illnesses are “genetic” or “hereditary” and that there’s nothing they can do so, “Line up at the counter and pop another pill, Jack!”

I’m not saying genetics don’t play a role in health, I’m just saying you shouldn’t sublimate your health to someone else’s opinion that you can’t do anything about it.

You CAN do something about it! You can ALWAYS do something about it.

There ARE solutions, and chances are they are simple, easy and right under the tip of your nose. But don’t give up on trying to find them, just because you’ve bumped into a few posts along your path. Keep going. Keep looking.

You’ll find them.

Lies require layers of elaborate explanations. They are complicated things.

Truth is simple. It just works. It makes sense.

People accept pain, discomfort, illness and fatigue as a part of their every day lives. It’s not “true” that life has to be this way. There are solutions and YOU can do something about it, whatever “it” is!

Heard any of these names circulating around your local “coffee shop”?

-Candida
-Eczema
-Psoriasis
-Weight gain
-Bloating
-Water retention
-ADD
-Autism
-Brain fog
-Mood disorders
-Bipolar
-Depression
-Anxiety
-IBS
-Leaky gut syndrome
-Crohn’s
-Thyroid and hormonal imbalances.

I have seen, heard stories and received countless letters by people who have overcome ALL of these conditions and a whole lot more as a result of ONE THING.

But that one thing is so misunderstood, so mystified, and so couched in confusion, that my dear friend and superhero Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo and I are going to set the record straight in a series of 4 teleseminars happening throughout the month of November.

ANYONE you know who suffers from ANY of the above conditions needs to be on these calls.

—> FREE teleseminar series   http://sixweekdetox.com

You don’t have to pay a dime. You just have to invest some time, hope and a willingness to learn while Dr. Ritamarie and I get up on our soap boxes and share some things that we KNOW will change the lives of anyone who hears it.

Everyone is invited. It doesn’t matter how sick, fat, tired you feel, there is SOMETHING in these calls that could turn your life around, so sign up and tune in. The calls are starting this Thursday:

—> FREE teleseminar series   http://sixweekdetox.com

It doesn’t take more than your name and email address.

We won’t chase you down to sell vacuum parts. We just want you to help us help the world. If you know anyone who is suffering with ANY of those conditions, or if someone came to mind while you read this letter, then send this to them.

I don’t know what it’s going to take to make this world the place I KNOW it can be, but I’m going to be frizzy- haired and frazzled at the end of my days for having done my best to make it happen.

I appreciate your help in getting this information out there. My megaphone can reach a lot farther with your help.

Thanks for listening and spreading this around.

It means a lot.

Love and red-headed determination,

Tera

P.S.

By the way, the calls will be recorded, so if you can’t attend the live version, we’ll make the recording available for you. All you have to do is sign up, we’ll send you the details right away.

P.P.S.

Oh my! I almost forgot to tell you about the woman that I met last week. I gave her a whole list of foods I thought would help her and some suggestions based on the people I’ve seen overcome the condition.

24-hours later, she was a COMPLETELY different person.
She said she’d not felt so much hope, so much health in almost 20 years. She wept at the fact that a perfect stranger seemed to have the solutions and offered them for free, when NO ONE else, not even the most highly paid doctors had any idea what to do.

Kinda puts things into perspective, doesn’t it.

Detoxing Your Gut: Understanding Leaky Gut and Candida Infections

by

Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo

I’m always asked questions like, “What’s the best way to cure Candida”  and  “How long does it take to heal leaky gut?”  The strategies for both are amazingly similar.  Not surprising, though, when you realize that both are caused by an overload of toxins that your body just doesn’t have the resources to get rid of.

I recorded a video clip about candida to answer some of the questions I get most frequently:

Watch my video about candida here…

So what is leaky gut , anyway?  It sounds kind of scary, doesn’t it?  Can I leave the house with a leaky gut?  Is it messy?  What’s actually leaking and where does it leak to?

Rest assured,  while leaky gut can have some very serious health complications, it’s generally not life threatening….at least not in the short term.  And nothing is leaking out of you, so no one can tell that you have it unless you tell them.  What’s leaking is the some of the contents of the small intestine, and where it’s leaking into is the blood stream.

Leaky gut is a very common condition of the small intestine.  Whereas a healthy small intestine will allow only fully digested food particles and nutrients to pass through, a leaky gut has been damaged and thus allows larger food molecules and toxins to readily enter the blood stream.  This can lead to food allergies, autoimmune disease, eczema, psoriasis, and a long laundry list of symptoms and health conditions.  Here’s a summary:

  1. **Gastrointestinal complaints: Abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, heartburn
  2. **Neurological disturbances: Aggressive behavior, anxiety, confusion, fuzzy or foggy thinking (brain fog), mood swings, nervousness, poor memory
  3. **Breathing troubles: Shortness of breath, asthma
  4. **Immune System Imbalances: Poor immunity, allergies, autoimmune diseases, recurrent bladder infections, recurrent vaginal infections
  5. **Skin Problems: skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis
  6. **Other Symptoms: chronic joint pain, chronic muscle pain, fatigue, bed wetting, hormone imbalances

These symptoms are, not surprisingly, very similar to the symptoms of candida overgrowth.  And, as you can tell, the symptoms are not confined to the gut!

There’s so much more I’d like to share about these very common yet often times overlooked conditions.   If you’re suffering from any of the symptoms listed above, you owe it to yourself to find out more.

If you’d like to learn what causes candida overgrowth and leaky gut,  and how to prevent and reverse them, be sure to sign up for the new free teleseminar series that Tera and I are offering.   The first class is Nov 5 and we’ll be talking about why undigested food is toxic, no matter how good the food is, the harmful byproducts of incomplete digestion and what happens when they enter your bloodstream, how your gut contributes to depression, brain fog, aches and pains, what caused your gut bacteria to go out of balance and so much more.

This is the first in a series of 4 free teleseminars, our gift to you as we enter into the holiday season.  Even if you can’t make the live classes, sign up anyway and we’ll send you the   recordings.

Detox Tip of the Day: Chew your Food to Prevent Leaky Gut

by Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo

Leaky gut is a problem faced b a large segment of the population.  This means that the little holes in your small intestine that normally allow only completely undigested food to enter your blood have been enlarged and inflamed, allowing stuff to enter your blood that has no business being there.  And when it gets there it causes problems, like brain food, stuffy sinuses, brain fog, depression and dozens of other common complaints.  There are lots of things you can do to prevent and repair this condition, and we’ll talk about it a lot in our Free Teleseminar on Candida and Leaky Gut on November 5.

Here’s a quick tip:  be sure to chew your food thoroughly.  The only teeth you have are in your mouth. If you swallow food that’s been only partially chewed, it’s likely that it will only be partially digested, and will irritate and inflame your intestine.  Over time, this can contribute to leaky gut.  Leaky gut can take months to repair and addressing leaky gut and clearing candida are important components  of an effective  cleansing and detoxification program.  Everyone can benefit from periodic cleansing and detoxification
